Living Room Refresh

When we started on this project, the space hadn't changed much over the past 15 years. Deep chocolate browns, tans and greens dominated the room, and the sofas and chairs had over a decade and a half of experience hosting family gatherings, prom photos, Christmases and birthday parties. The table by the window had been adopted by the dog as a perch for keeping an eye on the neighborhood squirrels. The room was definitely ready for a refresh!

Our goal was to give the living room a breath of fresh air, lightening up the dark, heavy colors and textures while still retaining its cozy and familiar feeling. The client still loved several of the furniture pieces, so instead of purchasing all new furniture, we kept those items and reupholstered them. A few new pieces helped to round out the space - a smaller loveseat to give better sight lines from the kitchen, a dog bed in front of the window to replace the table, and a hand-woven oriental wool rug to pull the space together. Custom pillows and window treatments lighten up the space and add a few pops of color and fun. We even found space for a hand-carved rocking chair that the client brought back from a trip to the Pacific Northwest; its organic curves and soft, flowing edges balance nicely against the more formal finishes and furniture in the room.

As each step was completed over the design process, the space began to feel more and more like the bright, sunny gathering space that it was always meant to be. The final product is a timeless, comfortable room with a light and joyful aura. The space invites conversation, welcoming friends to sit and stay a while next to the cozy fireplace.

See below for a few favorite process photos from the project.

Partially Reupholstered Armchair

The gold velvet base of the chair was in great shape, so we used it as a jumping-off point for the new design.

Reupholstered Sofa and Ottomans

The new dog bed in the window was fitted with custom wooden legs to match the sofa - expertly added by my colleagues at Home Again Fabrics and Furnishings, who also completed all of the reupholstery. We removed the nailheads on the sofa for a slightly more modern take.

Drapery

An early palette of material selections, including our chosen drapery fabric (left). The soft striations in the fabric provide a gentle flow and movement that helps brighten the space considerably. The next photo shows the old brown curtains in contrast with the newly sewn panels.

Rug

A new hand-woven wool rug sets the scene for the furniture and will last for the next many years to come.
